Choose X if you regularly find specific, open requests you can answer in their threads. Choose Reddit if the better conversations are in relevant communities and you can participate under those communities’ rules. Use both when each offers worthwhile conversations you have time to handle; choose neither if the requests you find do not fit your offer or welcome your answer. Compare actual conversations, not an assumption that activity on one platform predicts demand on the other.
Compare the conversation you can actually join
An apparent match is only the starting point. On X, a reply joins a particular post’s conversation, but the author can limit who may reply, including after posting. On Reddit, participation depends on platform-wide rules and the rules of the individual community. In either place, read the question and its existing answers before deciding that your recommendation would add anything.
Reddit’s spam guidance also cautions against repeated or unsolicited mass engagement. If your contributions consist primarily of links to a business you benefit from, it advises care about posting frequency and checking community-specific rules. That does not mean every seller answer is prohibited; it means finding a relevant question is not, by itself, permission to turn its comments into a pitch.
| Decision factor | X | |
|---|---|---|
| Where to inspect | A specific public post and its current replies. | A relevant community’s discussion and its rules. |
| Can you participate? | Check whether the post author allows you to reply. | Check community rules as well as platform-wide rules. |
| Work before answering | Verify that the need is still open, your offer fits and a direct reply helps. | Verify fit, read the discussion and decide whether a seller recommendation is appropriate there. |
| Work after answering | Watch for follow-up questions in the thread. | Stay available to clarify your answer without repeatedly promoting your business. |
A lamp seller, two different decisions
Consider a fictional desk-lamp shop that sells a $35 lamp with a 12 cm base. On X, someone asks for a lamp under $40 with a base no wider than 15 cm. The seller sees that the question is still unanswered and that they can reply. The product meets both stated limits, so the seller answers directly, discloses that they sell it and explains the fit. If the buyer has since picked a lamp or replies are restricted, the seller skips the post rather than treating the original wording as an open invitation.
Now suppose a fictional Reddit community has a detailed discussion about lighting for small desks. Relevance alone does not decide the seller’s next move. They read the discussion and community rules first. If someone is still asking for recommendations and a seller’s contribution is appropriate, they can explain how base width affects the choice and be clear about their connection to their lamp. If the discussion is about repairing existing lamps, or the community does not welcome that kind of seller recommendation, they do not insert their product. The resulting choice is to answer the X request and answer on Reddit only if that separate participation check passes—not to count two sales opportunities.
Reverse the inputs and the choice can reverse too. If the seller finds no suitable X requests but repeatedly encounters answerable questions in a community where they can contribute appropriately, Reddit deserves the time. A quiet X search is not a reason to dismiss that community, just as a busy X thread says nothing about whether a Reddit answer would be welcome.
Test each platform separately before committing time
For your own offer, review a recent set of candidate conversations on each platform separately. Record the buyer’s stated constraints, whether you can contribute, whether the question is still open and the time needed to write and follow up on a useful answer. Compare answerable conversations per unit of effort, not raw mentions of your product category. A single review gives you a starting decision, not a forecast of future request volume or sales.
For the X side, ReachFast says it reads a submitted website, finds relevant public X posts and ranks them by buying intent. Its first scan for one project is available without a card. Inspect the resulting posts yourself: ReachFast prepares replies, but you choose whether to send one from your own X account. Its described discovery covers X, so evaluate Reddit communities separately rather than using an X scan as evidence for or against Reddit. (reachfa.st)
If both platforms yield requests you can responsibly answer, divide your available response time between them and revisit the choice when the conversations change. If you are still deciding how to find X posts, see manual X search versus buying-intent tools.
